  • Making a difference…

Reveal is powered by purpose. Uncovering the potential of the supply chain is what we do. Improving lives is why we do it. Every Reveal employee shares these core beliefs and is empowered to become principle-centered leaders in our community and beyond. A portion of our profits goes to helping children in need receive the supplies they so often lack — food, water, shelter, education, and solace. In addition to gifting a portion of our profits, we also provide and offer every employee paid time off to “Give-Back”. This time aligns with our company’s purpose, it helps our mission of serving communities, and it grounds us and makes us appreciate everything we have.

My family and I leave for the Philippines in the coming days and are extremely excited and humbled to see how we can touch others and specifically help the thousands of street children that have been abandoned, abused or dangerously neglected. This is our time to give back, our time to reflect, and our time to grow as a family and serve others. Hopefully, through this, we are able to help mend broken lives and support the people that make a difference every day through education and providing an opportunity to those in need.

This leads me to the picture shown above– a great reminder why we do what we do. It is a hand-painted portrait hanging in my office of one of those street children, painted by a previously neglected and abandoned street child. His story goes like this… he grew up on the streets scrimping and scraping for food, sniffing glue to deal with the hunger pangs at night and ultimately abandoned by his parents. He was found and taken in by Frontline Ministries. This group nurtured him back to health, provided clothing, food, shelter, and opportunity. They also sponsored him to attend school.  After graduating high school, he went on to college. Since graduating from college he has returned to the school that gave him his base education as its Arts Director. Today, not only does he give back to those that helped him, he is making a difference by paying it forward to those that need it most.

Now this is an example of truly giving back.

  • Platform for Change

We have all seen versions of this show, whether it is America’s got Talent, Britain’s got Talent, Asia’s got Talent or another version of a talent show. We have all been entertained by the extraordinary wide range of “talents” that people possess.  An example that still stands out to me is the now famous Susan Boyle and her angelic voice that silenced Simon Cowell in her audition.  From a small industrial town in Scotland, she rocketed to stardom and was the runner up in one of the first seasons of Britain’s got Talent.  More recently the ukulele-strumming 12-year-old Grace VanderWaal won with her quaint charm, unique voice and completely original songs that have also turned her into a YouTube phenomenon.

This show is a platform for exposure. A platform where ordinary and not so ordinary people are given the means to expose their talents.  This ultimately leads to a winner who stands out through a series of judgments and rounds of voting.  Without this platform (and other similar formats) people like Susan Boyle would not have had the opportunity to brave stepping out of the “box” that she has been placed in most of her life. She has now blossomed into a household name.

SAP software is also a platform of exposure.  In many ways it can be a platform for organizations, and specifically the people inside the organization, to reveal their talents and truly blossom into world class and leading class organizations. This platform is where promises made to customers are kept, stakeholder value is generated and where people feel what they do matters.  Sadly though, when companies implement SAP, they tend to make it fit their old way of doing business. This approach keeps the business and people stuck in their “box”.  The legacy system and processes just have a new looking screen, but nothing else has changed.

Those organizations that have adopted SAP “as a way of doing business”, whether during the implementation or afterward, have revealed the hidden value in their people, challenged the traditional thinking of their industry practices and have been able to create a platform for continuous improvement and ongoing value optimization.

The good news is that I have personally seen many companies who have been stuck in the old way of doing things, been able to transform themselves out of that situation and see incredible improvements. They are experiencing increased service levels, increased inventory turns, free up working capital and improved EBITDA.  But it takes three brave steps:

    1. Understand the “box” you are in – and then make the collective decision to change holistically
    2. Set in motion a practical plan that will fundamentally change the way you do business
    3. Embed the process and new habits into the system, while allowing the people to use the platform (SAP) to continuously blossom and drive the business forward.

Trying to figure out if you can make a difference?  Listen to Tim Baker, CIO, on how Moen transformed their business by using SAP as a platform and catalyst for change.

  • My Technology Free Vacation Experiment

For the past 10 years, I have been completely accessible during my vacations.  Not only have I been accessible, I have only taken 4-5 day vacations (Thurs-Mon).  In essence, a long weekend.  My theory being, if I only take a few days off and if I can get some work done during the week, I won’t be so buried when I get back.  And of course, there are always the standard “emergencies” that “must” be handled while away.  However, this year I decided to do an experiment.  First, I decided to take a ONE WEEK vacation- at one time!  Also, I thought, “what would happen if I left my laptop at home and didn’t check emails?  Would the company survive?  Would I survive?”

According to Expedia’s Vacation Deprivation® survey, the United States is a vacation-deprived country to begin with.

Expedia® Vacation Deprivation® Findings by Country vacation chart

    Map

As a matter of fact, did you know that the United States is the only industrialized nation that doesn’t mandate a minimum amount of vacation by law?  For real, there is absolutely zero requirement for employers to provide vacation days in the land of the free. Many companies do offer vacation days.  Even still, Americans leave earned time off on the table.

    Statistics

In an overworked, under-vacationed society, can we really expect productivity levels to soar?  I won’t go into statistics, but I will tell you how my experiment fared.  First, you’ll be happy to know the company is still running.  Here’s the interesting thing- not only did I survive, I had a great week!  I returned to work calm, cool, and collected.  The normal things that might normally rattle me, didn’t even phase me.  Second, I had a goal of being caught up by the following Monday.  However, I was so ultra-productive. I went through all of my emails, prioritized all of my action items, and completed almost all of the action items by the end of the day.  And third, my brain was bursting with creative solutions to problems that had been plaguing me for months.  Here’s my takeaway:  the gains I received by taking a real vacation and not doing work while on vacation far outweighed the stress of falling behind and fear of not being able to catch up.

  • 10 Best Practices to Gain Supply Chain Visibility

    By Kevin Wilson

Extended Supply Chains have the following characteristics:

    • Multiple geographies – Where do your customers and partners reside?
    • Multiple languages and currencies
    • Multiple systems – SAP, EDI, Website, portals, …
    • Multiple partners – Carriers, freight forwarders, suppliers, manufacturers, distributors
    • Varying regulations and compliance requirements – What’s needed to ensure we conduct business legally across the globe?

Kevin Wilson Extended Supply Chain 1

Various physical events occur, for a product, as it flows through the extended supply chain. Best practices for this process could be listed as follows:

    1. Standard SAP transactions are used to capture transactions across the supply chain. E.g. Purchase Orders, confirmations, ASNs, Invoice receipts, Goods Receipts, …
    2. Use standard SAP solutions to manage the various parts of the supply chain. E.g. SAP ERP for Procure to Pay, Order to Cash, … SAP Ariba for supplier portal interaction, SAP Event Management for Supply Chain Event Management (the core topic of this blog)
    3. All events pertinent to the supply chain are received from all partners. E.g. Carrier status notifications, vendor Advanced Ship Notices, Manufacturer’s manufactured event, …
      • All exception events affecting the supply chain are received from all partners. A reason for the exception needs to be captured.
    4. Supply chain events are planned from a timing, location and partner E.g. We expect the delivery to be shipped at Warehouse ABC by Plant 1000 on 2/3/2017 @ 4pm.
      • These plans should be based on actual SAP transaction schedules (E.g. Sales Order schedule line) and the dates are determined based on master data (lead times).
    5. The execution of events (when and where they actually occur) are compared with their corresponding plan to determine any discrepancies. These discrepancies can lead to follow-on activities to take corrective action and root cause analysis.
    6. Monitoring of the Supply Chain plan for events that have not yet occurred, when they should have occurred. This best practice leads to follow-up activities to take corrective action.
    7. Events that span multiple processes should be correlated across all of them to ensure complete end-to-end visibility. E.g. Proof of delivery relates to Outbound Delivery, Shipment and Sales Order
    8. System messages that communicate the event are also planned and need to be measured.g. The EDI X12 856 is the message that tells us a supplier has shipped the product to us (ASN). We would set up a plan to receive the ASN within 4 hours of the physical shipping of the goods, to ensure that we get the ASN prior to receipt of the goods. I.e. The goods are expected to ship at 2PM and we expect to receive the message at 6PM telling us that the goods have shipped.
    9. Manage the Supply Chain by exception – With complete end-to-end visibility into the supply chain, as it’s executing, you are able to proactively identify and react to issues.
      1. Time to Insight – Time from the issue to when we realize that an issue has occurredKevin Wilson Supply Chain 2
      2. Time to Action – Time from the realization that an issue has occurred to when the resolution is actionedKevin Wilson Extended Supply Chain 3
    10. All data flows from SAP to an analytics tool (SAP HANA Analytics) for aggregation and further “opportunity discovery”. i.e. Where can we find ways to improve the future process, by analyzing the effectiveness of past performance.

  • Who Took a Supply Chain Selfie and Won?

And the winner is … cue the drum roll, if you please

A few weeks ago, we launched a promotion: Take a selfie of your supply chain by taking a Reveal Self Assessment, our online tool that scores your company’s supply chain maturity. Participants who took the Self Assessment between March 15, 2016, and April 1, 2016, were automatically entered to win a drawing. Five people would take home TaoTronics smartphone selfie sticks, and the grand prize winner would receive a brand-new iPad Air 2 with protective case.

We went old school for this drawing: All supply chain selfie participants were assigned a respective number; all those numbers were put into a large hat. Then we literally pulled numbers out of the hat at random.

The five runners up: Winners of a selfie stick

    • Kevin N.
    • Michael M.
    • James W.
    • Chris M.
    • Kevin A.

Grand prize: Winner of a brand-new iPad Air 2 and protective case

    • Marcel B.

Congratulations to all the winners! We have contacted each them individually as to determine where their prizes should be sent.

We hope everyone who participated found the Self Assessment results to be informative. • Reveal Broadens Supply Chain Advisory Footprint

Reveal USA, Q Data USA and Expert IG join forces to expand range of SAP supply chain management services

Supply chain industry leaders Reveal, Expert IG and Q Data proudly announce that the three independent companies are unifying to create one expanded brand under the Reveal name. The three organizations have integrated to create a brand that partners with SAP-centric businesses to transform them by challenging the traditional thinking on the modern supply chain and revealing the hidden value through the smart use of people, processes and technology.

Effective immediately, Reveal offers the complete breadth of SAP-centric supply chain services. By combining Q Data’s implementation expertise and Expert IG’s business networks and analytic thought leadership with the proven supply chain optimization capabilities of Reveal, the unified brand now artfully spans the range of SAP supply chain management needs to provide unparalleled SAP-centric solutions to the market.

Reveal serves medium- to large-size SAP-centric organizations, enabling them to run more efficiently. To accomplish this, it leverages its proprietary ongoing Value optimization® (oVo®) methodology and offers companies the ability to sustainably improve their supply chain operations. With this expansion, Reveal is now uniquely positioned to cater to its clients’ needs more fluidly and more completely.

About the move, Martin Rowan, Senior Partner at Reveal, said, “These are exciting times! Reveal is leading the supply chain market in so many ways, and once again, this strategic move will allow us to continue to lead through our expanded thought leadership. By combining our offerings into a single team, we will deepen our relationship with our clients as well as create more opportunities for us to give back.”

Reveal transforms organizations through innovative supply chain management strategies. While the brand has evolved, the expertise and quality its clients have come to expect has not changed. Companies in search of effective SAP-centric consulting services now have a singular resource for all their supply chain management needs. With the combined thought leadership of all three original organizations, Reveal is poised to leverage its industry expertise to provide the market with comprehensive and robust supply chain solutions.

When questioned, Reveal’s Thought Leaders offered the following perspectives on the exciting new direction:

“The merger of our three companies completes our strategic plan for building a single organization that can challenge the traditional thinking on the modern supply chain — one that can unleash the hidden value for every customer with which we partner by optimizing their people, processes and technology,” said Steven Crooke, Senior Partner at Reveal. “I am excited about the opportunity that this merger presents to our clients and team members.”

“Some companies merge to satisfy their investors; other companies merge to survive market conditions; few companies merge to bring a new and continued value to their customers and prospects,” said Jim Cameron, Partner at Reveal. “The merger of Reveal, Q Data and Expert IG is the most strategic alignment of companies to benefit SAP-centric enterprises in this decade. My team and I are excited to be a part of this historic offering to the SAP community.”

“We are merging our collective expertise and creating brand unity within a new Reveal,” explained Sean Elliffe, Partner at Reveal. “We know we are ready for new growth and opportunities that will increase our market relevancy long-term, streamline and align our lines of business and open doors to incorporate relationships with new audiences. We will continue to reveal hidden value to businesses, and we will help them transform what matters most to them.”

“Personally, I am very excited to be a part of this change. We had three separate companies, each leading their respective markets in terms of quality of service and value brought to the customer,” said Kevin Wilson, Partner at Reveal. “The synergy between each of our service offerings across the supply chain, covering people, process and technology, was very evident to me. With the launch of the new Reveal, with one truly unified approach toward bringing real value to our clients’ supply chain processes, I am looking forward to spreading our unique message.”

To celebrate this new beginning, Reveal is committed to giving back to its community at large, donating a portion of its profits to help children in need. In keeping with its mission, Reveal seeks to transform not only supply chains, but also the lives they touch.
